About the artist

Elizabeth Lazeren, Copley Artist, Truro, MA

“Elizabeth is best known for her marine paintings that have a solitary and sublime melancholy.”
AMERICAN ART COLLECTOR magazine

The artist uses memory, experience and imagination. She works toward paintings that have a clarity of
mood but a vague sense of place. Choosing elements that are signature components of her work, she
strives toward a goal of emotional and impressionistic clarity. Her paintings are in collections from Los
Angeles to Newfoundland to the Hart Senate Building in Washington, D.C. A visit to her Truro studio
on Tom’s Hill is welcome. Please call 508 349-6821.

Artist statement

I live in Truro, Cape Cod and have been painting since I was 12. I have taught painting to all ages and I continue to seek out workshops from masters who will help me become a better painter. The outer Cape is where I find the seascapes, art, fellow painters, maritime history and support system that influences my work. Living in this beautiful, wild and seafaring place, I am inspired by its history, environment and the people. I use memory, experience and imagination when painting. I work at making paintings that have a clarity of mood, but an obscure sense of place. I begin by making loose value sketches before I set up my canvas. My process at the easel begins with thinking that less is more and so I distill an image while constructing it in my mind, and then onto the canvas.
