The bed of blue flowers below represents the humanity that is always there supporting our efforts whether they be family, friends or just admirers. This piece uses watercolor paints, ink and graphite on paper.

In this mythical landscape, angel flowers are coming from above to share their powers of happiness onto the world. The lives below, comprising of many different flowers (shades of mankind), are all working together in this utopian landscape with two moons and purple skies.

Following in the floral content of Orange Flower and Gold Flower, this larger piece continues its focus on interplay as the lower flowers seem to be taking protection from the larger, more flamboyant entity. The rich blue/aqua background enhance the pinks and whites of the main flower while the abstractions from the underpainting help create depth and a luminous feel.

This painting, as all my pieces do, starts from an abstract underpainting of horizontal and vertical patterns. In this piece I’ve taken a painting, which I wasn’t happy with, leaving the flowers in the top left and bottom right. I then began the process of filling in the rest while leaving some semblance of the prior painting and creating an abstract imagery with the use of yellows, thick impasto and linear lines. The flowers, like humans, create a passion through their interactions with each other.

The conversation starts in this painting with the orange tulips conversing with the large dominant flower. The large flower seems aloof to all but seems to actually be interacting with the tulip on the left. Much like real life as we look to state our points to those in power or dominant over us. Can you relate to this scene?

During a visit to Maine, on a walk, I was taken by a stately oak tree that was sitting alone majestically in an expansive landscape. I took a photo of the tree and a mental note of my feeling from the visuals I saw on that day. The flowers on that walk are depicted here, however, there were none by the tree. The impression for me was of awe. Nature always finds its way to impress us.

Floral Arrangements, new work by artist David Dauer, represents a transition over the past two years from his surrealistic stories to a new world of nature and life, using flowers as the vehicle to tell his stories. 

"In my new work I develop abstract structures with rich textures to create a vibrant underpainting. With that done I draw my imagery and then paint using color washes and thick paint to create rich and vibrant color.  Flowers, and in some cases landscapes, are the vehicle to convey my visual conversations. Flowers represent more than what we see in the natural world. They represent all life and the interactions we experience around us.”

David holds both a BFA (UMass Dartmouth) and an MFA (Kent State University) with continued studies in design from UMass Dartmouth. He has participated in group and solo shows. For over 30 years he worked in the Publishing and Advertising fields as a designer, art director and creative director. 

Born in Brooklyn, NY he grew up in Framingham, MA. For 35 years he lived in Milton, MA until recently settling in Canton, MA with his wife Debbie.

The interaction between these two flowers is quite evident in my portrayal of a unique conversation. It represents all conversations we see on a daily basis. What are they talking about? Are they calm, angry, happy?  What do you see?

The pink flower rises up on this golden landscape. Its top is as bright as the sun as a group of tulips stand tall underneath it, as if paying homage to its unique stature in the world.

I believe I was thinking about our country when I painted this watercolor. At that moment there was much negativity in the air. Then the I thought about the song “America.” The Lyrics, “For purple mountain majesties, Above the fruited plain.” Thus this beautiful flower and the purple sky…There is glory every day that comes our way, we just have to open our eyes.

A mother flower protects her child from the unknown intrusion by another in this abstracted landscape of yellow. There are subtle shapes in this fictional landscape that represent those that stand in the back without support to those in need. Like all of us at some point, we needed a matriarch to protect us.
